Our history

The Precinct has a proud history of delivering healthcare for more than 150 years.

1867 Brisbane Hospital

1867 Brisbane Hospital

The first public hospital in Brisbane, the Moreton Bay Hospital, was established in 1849 near the site of the present Supreme Court in the CBD and served people to the north, south and west of Brisbane. By 1856, other hospitals had been established away from Brisbane, and the hospital was renamed the Brisbane Hospital.

In 1867, a new hospital was built at Herston and patients were moved to the Brisbane Hospital.

The first nurses graduated from the hospital in 1888 and in 1939, The University of Queensland Medical School was opened adjacent to the hospital. Since that time, the hospital has provided training for thousands of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. The Royal Brisbane Hospital was so named in 1966 and was the major teaching hospital for Queensland.

The first women’s hospital began in 1864 and was originally located in the nearby suburb of Spring Hill. By the end of 1929, plans commenced for a new maternity hospital adjacent to the Brisbane Hospital and was opened as the new Women’s Hospital in 1938.

Queen Elizabeth II gave permission to use the prefix “Royal” to the Brisbane Hospital and Brisbane Women’s Hospital in 1966 and 1967 respectively. It wasn’t until 2003 that the two hospitals amalgamated to become Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH).

The modern-day RBWH is Queensland’s largest quaternary and tertiary referral teaching hospital, and by supporting and producing world-leading research and education, is a prominent innovator in the pursuit of ever-improving patient outcomes.

After more than 30 years operating in Victoria Park, QIMR relocated its laboratories to the grounds of the Royal Brisbane Hospital in 1977, heralding a new era for this world-class research institute.

In 1989, construction began on a new QIMR building and in 1991 The Bancroft Centre was opened. In 1997, building of the Clive Berghofer Cancer Research Centre began.

In 2002, Q-Pharm Pty Ltd, a joint venture between QIMR, UQ and notable Professors Hooper and Dickenson established the Phase 1 clinical trials facility to test potential new therapeutic products on humans.

In 2004, QIMR created Q-Gen Pty Ltd as its commercial arm for the contract manufacture of cell-based therapies.
