Australian e-Health Research Centre

The Australian e-Health Research Centre (AEHRC) at Herston Health Precinct is a joint venture between the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Queensland Government. AEHRC is the CSIRO’s national Digital Health Research Program.

The AEHRC is committed to helping solve Australia’s greatest health and healthcare challenges, by developing innovative solutions in a range of areas including big data analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, biomedical imaging, genomics, mobile health and the health internet of things.

The AEHRC has 50 research staff and 15 students based at Herston Health Precinct, with a further 50 staff and students around Australia.

Its scientists and engineers work closely with clinicians and researchers across the precinct, along with clinical, government and industry groups throughout Australia.

AEHRC research collaborations at Herston Health Precinct include:

• Novel medical imaging technologies to help with treatment decisions for diseases such as brain tumours at Herston Imaging Research Facility.
• Health informatics and bioinformatics scientists developing new technologies to understand the relationships between a patient’s genome and their disease with QIMR Berghofer.
• Developing clinical decision support tools for emergency department staff and using data to improve health system efficiency.
• Mobile platforms to support management of cardiac disease, pain management and chronic disease.

As part of CSIRO, the AEHRC participates in the CSIRO ON program, Australia’s national science and technology accelerator. The first spin-out from the ON program was Cardihab, a commercialisation of the mobile cardiac rehabilitation program developed and trialled with Metro North
